Aussies are incredibly loving and devoted to their families, especially children. Their loyalty and attentiveness make them excellent watchdogs. Since having their first litter, Zoey and Onyx have become more alert and watchful, ensuring their family and home are safe. However, once they recognize visitors as welcome guests, they quickly relax. This balance of protective instinct and affectionate nature is what makes Aussies such exceptional companions.
Energy & Exercise Needs
Australian Shepherds are an active and intelligent breed that thrives with regular exercise and mental stimulation. They enjoy outdoor activities like hiking, frisbee, fetch, flyball, and agility sports. Note, however, that we’ve found that when given structure and provided adequate attention when their family is home, Aussies can also adapt well to a working family’s schedule. Our dogs have free range of the house from around 6:00–7:00 a.m. until 5:00–6:00 p.m. while we are at work, and we have never had any issues with destructive behaviour. We make sure they get playtime and exercise after work and on weekends. We believe that how they are raised plays a big role in their ability to be calm and well-adjusted while alone. We’ve also heard from other Aussie owners that their dogs have been similarly well-behaved when given the right balance of attention and activity.
Aussie Colours & Eyes
There are four standard colours in Australian Shepherds: Black, Red, Blue Merle, Red Merle
Each can have white markings and/or copper points. Their striking eyes come in a variety of colours, including brown, blue, amber, or a mix—some even feature flecks or marbling.
Lifespan & Size
Lifespan: 12–16 years
Females: 18"–21", 45–55 lbs
Males: 20"–23" at the shoulder, 50–65 lbs
Aussies have a medium-length, weather-resistant coat that requires brushing a few times a week to remove dead hair and minimize shedding. Routine care, including nail trimming and ear checks, helps keep them in top condition.
Compared to many other breeds, Aussies are relatively low-maintenance in grooming—especially when fed a high-quality raw or premium kibble diet, which promotes a healthy, self-cleaning coat that naturally repels dirt.
